Trump Goes Off On Insane Rant About Fox News & Twitter Immediately Pounces

President Trump, ever the avid consumer of Fox News, posted to Twitter this Thursday morning about something that he had, evidently, seen on the network. In his tweets, he says that he was as much the victim of Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election as the Democrats were, writing:

‘”One of the things that has been lost in the politics of this situation is that the Russians collected and spread negative information about then candidate Trump.” Catherine Herridge @FoxNews. So why doesn’t Fake News report this? Witch Hunt! Purposely phony reporting.’

There he goes with the “fake news” accusations again.

Anyway, Trump’s assertion here isn’t at all immediately able to be verified, and Fox News has, of course, peddled conspiracy theories in the past, and there could be at least two explanations for what Trump is talking about here.

For one, there was a point in the 2016 presidential election cycle when the Russians hadn’t yet “chosen” Trump as the candidate they wanted to win, so during that time, they would have had an incentive to spread false, damaging information about the belligerent businessman turned political leader. That doesn’t negate the fact that they eventually worked to help Trump’s bid for president. The Russians’ efforts were never about Trump in particular; rather, the Russians have all along simply been seeking the best way to advance their own goals.

There is another possible explanation for what Trump is talking about here since, again, it’s not necessarily immediately clear to anyone who wasn’t watching Fox News Thursday.

Earlier this month, the right leaning Washington Times ran a story entitled “Democrats intentionally used disinformation from Russia to attack Trump, campaign aides.” The “disinformation” that the story is referring to is the infamous Steele dossier, which is a compilation of combined salacious and intense unproven charges against Trump and various members of his team.

Few Democrats, if any, have ever claimed that the allegations contained in that dossier were proven. Rather, they have simply pointed to them as allegations, and, remember, for what it’s worth, they are serious enough to have attracted the attention of the FBI.

Combining these points together reveals Trump’s latest tweets as unsurprisingly shallow.
