President Trump isn’t very good at taking responsibility for his own actions — to put it lightly. It’s always the Democrats’ fault, or establishment Republicans’ fault, or the fault of the “fake news.”

It was no different on Saturday, when Trump finally responded to North Korea’s recent test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. This ICBM can reach well into the American heartland and, of course, bring serious devastation with it. The North Koreans haven’t let up on their campaign to convince the world that they are quite ready to launch an ICBM — with a nuclear payload — at a moment’s notice.

This issue is obviously very serious, so how did our president respond when he finally got around to actually responding?

In a Saturday Twitter rant he said — wait for it — that it’s China’s fault. He made no reference to the possibility of American negotiations with the North Koreans; and he likewise made no reference to the fact that any negotiating efforts would be undercut by the fact that Trump has yet to fill a wide array of positions in the State Department, opting to focus his energy on developing brute force.

Instead, he wrote:

‘I am very disappointed in China. Our foolish past leaders have allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk. We will no longer allow this to continue. China could easily solve this problem!’

Not only did he blame the North Korea situation on China, but Trump even managed to slip in an insult directed at the Obama Administration, because of course he did.

Trump is basing his grandiose proclamations here on the fact that China helps keep North Korea afloat, so to speak, through their economic transactions with the dictatorship. They discontinued a few of these transactions earlier this year, but the effect on the overall size of their trade with North Korea was negligible.

One of the most concrete steps that Trump has taken to addressing North Korea is the deployment of a U.S. Navy strike crew to the waters off North Korea earlier this year. In doing so, you could say Trump was just playing their game.
