In the era of President Donald Trump, every last bit of resistance has a place. Sure, the Congress is controlled by the GOP at present, but in two years time, we are going to have the chance to change that. In the meantime, it’s important for the Trump opposition to not fade away.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona’s 7th District is one of those who is a part of the anti-Trump resistance and doesn’t plan to go anywhere anytime soon. He spoke this week with Dean Obeidallah on his radio show, and in response to the president’s striking silence on the recent bombing attack on a Minnesota mosque, Rep. Gallego said that President Trump “is an absolute racist.”
He began by telling Obeidallah:
‘Number one, we need to tell the xenophobe racist bigot that did this that this is not acceptable, and that no part of our government thinks this is something you should be allowed [to do]… Two, there are a lot of Muslim young men and women right now that are feeling marginalized, and we’re making them feel more and more marginalized… It’s not fair that we are making these young men and women think we don’t want them in our country.’
He went on to hit Trump more personally, saying:
‘When we have the president of the United States and other politicians saying that we will protect you… that goes a long way… It’s disappointing that Trump doesn’t show any leadership — for someone who will tweet about anything that he see’s like a leak, the fact that he won’t tweet about this is disgusting… At the core, we just have to admit Donald Trump himself is a racist. He is an absolute racist.’
Rep. Gallego, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Natural Resources, has spoken out against Trump in the past. As for the Trump Administration, the highly controversial presidential adviser Sebastian Gorka told an MSNBC host this week that the Trump Administration would remain silent on the recent attack until the investigation was complete.
As Rep. Gallego noted in his commentary, if the attack at the center of this controversy was perpetrated by a Muslim against Christians, you can be sure that the White House would be all over it.
