President Trump has a longstanding love-hate relationship with the media. Specifically, the president loves news stations that report him in a positive light, but any news sources that report the truth — which paints Trump in the negative light that he deserves — the president condemns as fake news.
The president held what he referred to as a “press conference,” although he refused to take questions from reporters. Trump, top administration officials, and members of the White House press corps gathered in the Diplomatic Reception Room at the White House to hear the president announce an investigation into China’s intellectual property laws.
Trump made a statement, albeit a little late, that condemned racism, specifically criticizing the KKK, Nazis and other groups who had organized the rally in Charlottesville. Reporters pressed Trump to take questions in regards to his response to the Charlottesville rally, during this announcement.
CNN’s senior White House correspondent asked Trump why it took him two days to publicly condemn the white nationalist groups who rallied in Charlottesville. In reference to his comments on the violence in Charlottesville earlier in the day, Trump responded, “They have been condemned. They have been condemned.”
Acosta then asked the president Trump why he wasn’t holding a press conference to take questions on the events in Charlottesville, to which Trump replied, whilst pointing at Acosta:
‘It doesn’t bother me at all, but I like real news, not fake news. You’re fake news.’
Acosta, who has clashed with President Trump, and members of his administration, in the past, did not let that comment slide. Acosta replied:
‘Haven’t you spread a lot of fake news yourself, sir?’
Trump ignored Acosta’s question, swiftly exiting the room. Acosta also criticized the president’s choice to call the meeting a press conference on Twitter, due to the fact that, if it was in fact a press conference, Trump would have allowed the press to ask questions and receive answers.
Trump truly resembles a bratty child more and more every day. His response to a member of the media, who he thinks should report more favorably on him, was reminiscent of a young child telling a friend that they’re not invited to their birthday party because they did something to make him angry.
