President Trump’s response to the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia has been heavily condemned by people on the right and the left. While Republican politicians have, for the most part, criticized without much action, a Democratic Representative from California has moved to have Trump suspended from office under the 25th Amendment.

On Friday, Rep. Zoe Lofgren called on Vice President Mike Pence and the rest of Trump’s cabinet to force Trump to undergo a mental evaluation to determine whether or not he is fit to remain in office. In a press release from Lofgren’s office, the California Democrat asks:

‘Does the President suffer from early stage dementia? Has the stress of office aggravated a mental illness crippling impulse control? Has emotional disorder so impaired the President that he is unable to discharge his duties? Is the President mentally and emotionally stable?’

In Lofgren’s resolution, which is quoted in the press release, she argues that an evaluation is necessary because of Trump’s “disturbing pattern of actions and public statements.”

‘Many Americans, including many Republicans, have observed the President’s increasingly disturbing pattern of actions and public statements that suggest he may be mentally unfit to execute the duties required of him. The President has not released a serious medical evaluation. Just as would be the case if the President were physically unable to execute the office of the President, this resolution urges those entrusted with the responsibility enshrined in the 25th Amendment to employ the services of medical and psychiatric professionals to help in their determination whether the President is mentally capable of carrying out his Constitutional responsibilities.’

The 25th Amendment says that the president can be suspended and the vice president can take over if the president is deemed “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”

Lofgren’s call for Trump to be removed under the 25th Amendment comes just days after she tweeted that there is something “seriously wrong with President Trump.”

Perhaps the introduction of the amendment is a response to her followers. After she posted the above tweet, many responded, asking her to file a resolution and try to get Trump out.
