The president has one main objective and one main objective alone — to advance his personal agenda. Thus, he’s willing to put aside personal concerns of individuals in order to make a show.
After hinting that he would do so for days, the president has now officially pardoned former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was recently convicted of contempt of court for continuing to use his police department as a de facto arm of federal immigration authorities even after being ordered to stop.
Sure, there is little justification for the Trump camp’s seemingly never ending anti-immigrant rhetoric, and yes, Arpaio continuing to investigate people’s immigration status even after being ordered to stop unduly placed people in harms way — but Trump has an agenda to push, remember? He surely doesn’t care about the fact that the former Sheriff literally broke the law.
A statement published by the White House on the occasion of the pardon reads, in part:
‘Throughout his time as Sheriff, Arpaio continued his life’s work of protecting the public from the scourges of crime and illegal immigration. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now eighty-five years old, and after more than fifty years of admirable service to our Nation, he is [a] worthy candidate for a Presidential pardon.’
