Many Americans have had comments and opinions on the sitting president’s controversial pardon of former Sheriff Joe Arpaio. One who has not spoken out on this matter however, was former President Barack Obama. Obama has taken the high road and refrained from commenting on the pardon of Arpaio.
However, that did not stop President Obama’s former secretary of housing and urban development Julian Castro from coming down hard on Donald Trump in a powerful tweet.
After announcing that he would pardon Arpaio during his Arizona campaign rally, 45 took advantage of the impending hurricane Harvey. Trump sneaked his bizarre political promise in under the threatening Texas storm skies Friday.
Castro tweeted his one-word description of the Maricopa County, Arizona sheriff, soon after the president’s campaign rally:
‘Trump in one word tonight: #pendejo.’
Generally translated from Spanish to English, “pendejo” means “dumbass.”
Arpaio aggressively terrorized both legal and undocumented immigrants in his county during his reign. He racially profiled Latinos and even illegally detained people with Spanish-sounding names.
As a result, Sheriff Joe symbolized the worst of immigration politics. A judge ordered him to stop his illegal actions, but he refused. As a result, the former sheriff bought himself a criminal contempt conviction with a six-month sentence.
The White House released a statement that complimented Arpaio profusely, according to the New York Times:
‘(Arpaio gave) years of admirable service to our nation…(and was a) worthy candidate for a presidential pardon.’
Trump called the former sheriff “an American patriot” and sent out a tweet saying “He kept Arizona safe!” according to the Times:
‘I am pleased to inform you that I have just granted a full Pardon to 85 year old American patriot Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He kept Arizona safe!’
The Times wrote that Trump gushed over the convicted sheriff in his statement:
“Throughout his time as sheriff, Arpaio continued his life’s work of protecting the public from the scourges of crime and illegal immigration.’
The former sheriff thanked 45 for the pardon, calling his conviction a “political witch hunt by holdovers in the Obama justice department:”
‘Thank you @realdonaldtrump for seeing my conviction for what it is: a political witch hunt by holdovers in the Obama justice department!’
Then, Arpaio directed people to a website where they could donate to help him with his legal fees.
