Leave it to the president to make major policy announcements via Twitter. After having indicated at a recent campaign rally that he was considering pulling out of NAFTA altogether, he has now repeated that indication in a belligerent tweet posted early this Sunday morning.
‘We are in the NAFTA (worst trade deal ever made) renegotiation process with Mexico & Canada. Both being very difficult, may have to terminate?’
There are numerous issues here.
Firstly, did he consult with his advisers before posting this tweet that strikes at the very core of American trade policy. We can all concur that the answer to that question is probably no.
Does Trump even know how crucial NAFTA is to the functioning of the economies of the North American continent? Does he even know what a free trade agreement is?
To what depths have we sunk thanks to Trump that we have to ask these questions?
Secondly, why does the president continue to seem hellbent on angering every ally we have ever had in the entire world? He’s gone from placing angry post-inauguration phone calls to the Prime Minister of Australia to tweeting like a schoolyard bully about how “very difficult” Canada and Mexico are supposedly being.
