President Trump may be massively unpopular, especially in light of his less-than presidential handling of Hurricane Harvey. However, Trump Tower, the gold-plated skyscraper that, until recently, housed the first lady and the youngest Trump child, Barron, remains a heavily frequented tourist attraction in New York City.
In order to educate tourists about all sides of the president, two New York City-based artists snuck some interesting items into the Trump Tower gift shop on Monday. According to Gothamist, a New York-centered news website, the list of items that appeared on the shop’s shelves includes the following:
‘A Trump-emblazoned KKK hood “for fine people,” sealed packages of pee-proof rubber sheets, and a Russian flag.’
At the front of the store, there were also postcards that featured “the 45th President of the United States, Vladimir Putin, along with cards paying tribute to First Lady Ivanka Trump, and the flap of flesh near the president’s throat area, known as a Wattle.”
One of the two artists, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Gothamist about the reasoning behind sneaking in the joke items:
‘We thought the tourists coming in to buy some stuff, especially people from other countries, should get the whole story of who the president is, because the items in the Trump store don’t accurately reflect the person.’
The artist also admitted that, based on the experience his partner had when they set out the blatantly satirical products, there’s a possibility that the Trump administration might too ridiculous to properly mock.
‘My partner was in the back putting in some of the items and he said to someone, “Oh did you see this?” and they didn’t even bat an eye.’
‘Every time you think you’re going to get Trump on something, he outdoes the parody. He hasn’t started selling white hoods yet, but after that batsh*t speech he gave two floors up—well if there’s enough money to be made, he’d probably start.’
The speech to which the artist was referring was Trump’s denunciation of the “alt left” following the violent white supremacist rally that took place earlier this month in Charlottesville, North Carolina.
The employees who work in the gift shop didn’t seem to notice the joke items on display until someone from Gothamist tried to purchase a postcard on Tuesday. They were ordered out of the store, and, an hour later, all of the products appeared to have been removed.
