President Trump and his children complain constantly about how much criticism they receive on social media. At the same time, they practically beg to be ridiculed every time they tweet without thinking about how their messages will be received.
On Friday, Eric Trump could have tweeted a message encouraging his followers to use their Labor Day weekend to do something to help the people in Houston who are suffering from the effects of Hurricane Harvey. Instead, though, he opted to retweet a post from the Trump Golf account asking followers where they would be hitting the links over the Labor Day weekend.
The post in question can be seen below, without any additional commentary from the president’s middle son.
It didn’t take long for Eric’s followers to start commenting on the tweet. Plenty made it clear that they will not be spending their long weekend anywhere near a Trump property, and several others criticized him for promoting the family business while thousands of people in Houston are desperate for basic necessities.
One would think that Eric would want to stay off social media entirely after yesterday’s fiasco. He embarrassed himself pretty badly while attempting to criticize the mainstream media, specifically CNN, for not publishing more positive stories about his dad.
On Thursday evening, Eric retweeted a story from Fox News about President Trump’s plan to donate $1 million of his personal money to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Instead of leaving well enough alone and saying something about how he was proud of his father, Eric also had to attack CNN by predicting that they wouldn’t even cover the news about the president’s donation. The problem with this attack, of course, was that CNN had already written about the donation — three hours before Eric’s tweet was posted.
Someday, the Trumps may realize that they can mitigate the amount of criticism they receive on social media by doing some basic research and thinking about the consequence of the messages they post. Until that day comes, though, the rest of the world will simply continue to call them out on their nonsense.
