With all that has been going on over the past several weeks, it can be easy to forget that the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election is still ongoing. Of late, former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort has been the focus of that investigation. Manafort’s home was recently raided by the FBI and there are now questions concerning whether or not he had anything to do with Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Now, there are reports that the Manafort investigation may be more serious than previously thought.

The Washington Post reports that during a discussion regarding the Senate Judiciary Committee’s upcoming meeting with Donald Trump Jr., Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) mentioned that Manafort has been far more resistant than Trump Jr. The Democratic senator speculated that that might be because Manafort is facing serious criminal charges.

‘Manafort has been resistant, to be very blunt. Certainly much more resistant than Trump.  Perhaps surprisingly but not really so much because Manafort probably is confronting some fairly serious criminal charges.’

The Senate Judiciary Committee does not have the power to prosecute, but that seems to be little comfort for Manafort. Blumenthal said that they could “elicit information from” Manafort and that he would not be offered immunity. Manafort’s role in Russia’s interference in the 2016 election remains unclear, but if Blumenthal is willing to openly discuss the possibility of criminal charges, then that would imply that they have something concrete on him.

As far as Trump is concerned, Blumenthal did not mention any criminal charges and noted that their questions for him were about money and the Trump Organization’s possible ties to Russia.

‘It’s all about following the money . . . financial dealings and how that entangled the Trump Organization.’

It is likely that Trump will be asked about the July 2016 meeting between himself and a Russian attorney. The attorney promised information that would damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign though Trump has stated that the meeting was a waste of time and he did not learn anything.

There are also reports that Manafort was present at the July meeting, though we still don’t know exactly what was discussed there. Trump has said that nothing happened, but, as of right now, we only have his word for it. Hopefully, the Senate and Robert Mueller will get to the bottom of this and other Russia-related matters.
