Every Living Ex-President Just Did More For Irma Victims Than Trump Ever Dreamed

In late August, Hurricane Harvey caused massive destruction in the state of Texas, and Hurricane Irma, which is currently making its way through Florida, is expected to result in even more damage. In an attempt to help Americans recover from these storms, five former U.S. presidents — Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Jimmy Carter — announced earlier this week that they are launching an initiative called the One America Appeal.

One America Appeal, according to its website, will raise funds for various organizations that are working to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

‘Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have brought terrible devastation – but also brought out the best in humanity. As former Presidents, we wanted to come together to help our fellow citizens in Texas and Florida as they recover and rebuild.’

The Frequently Asked Questions section of the initiative’s website explains the reason the five former presidents decided to work together.

‘The former Presidents were inspired to come together in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which unleashed devastating flooding — and spurred thousands of first responders and neighbors into action. More than one million people have been displaced by Harvey, which has caused up to $180 billion in damages to over 200,000 homes over a 300-mile path of destruction. The One America Appeal has been expanded to include victims of Hurricane Irma in Florida.’

The website also notes that “100 cents out of every dollar donated” will go directly to hurricane victims.

‘All funds collected through the One America Appeal will go into a special account at the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, to ensure 100 cents out of every dollar donated goes to hurricane victims. All monies collected will be distributed immediately to the designated recovery funds.’

In Texas, all funds raised will go to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund and the Rebuild Texas Fund. In Florida, funds will go to the Florida Disaster Fund.

The former presidents also created a public service announcement that will air all day Sunday and on Monday morning during the National Football League telecasts.
