In what is becoming an all-too-familiar occurrence, an innocent man has lost his life to yet another Trump-supporting racist jerk with more bullets than brain cells.
This saga begins with the arrest of Kevin Ashley Parnell’s stepdaughter, a biracial woman, on charges of prostitution. Parnell blamed the arrest on the woman’s ex-boyfriend, Jordan Briggs. Parnell sent a stream of online threats on Facebook that were quite racially charged. According to Rawstory, the messages included:
‘I’m going to strip you naked and whip you like the slave you are.’
‘You were warned.’
The images were not available on Facebook in an open search, but the Star-Telegram was able to screen capture one message before it was deleted:
Eventually, Parnell showed up in a white pickup truck at the apartment Briggs shared with Sammie Jones. Briggs warned Jones not to open the door. Briggs told the Texas newspaper:
‘He banged on the door three times. I told Sammie not to answer. I went to the back and instantly froze up.’
Jones thought he might diffuse the situation, so he answered the door. As Briggs related the incident to police, he said Jones:
‘…was attempting to calm the man down when Parnell remarked, “You know what kind of gun this is boy, it is a Glock 40,”’
‘Sammie was being so calm. … He just shot my bro in the face and burned off.’
Briggs looked down the hall after hearing the gunshot and saw Parnell closing the door as he left. A neighbor reported hearing the gunshot and seeing Parnell speed off in a white truck. A statement from homicide Sgt. Joe Loughman relayed the senselessness of this killing:
‘He was shot because he was trying to keep an irate man from his friend.’
Jones, who was only 28 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A warrant was taken out against Parnell that night and he was apprehended the following day while working at the General Motors plant in Arlington. Parnell is being held in the Mansfield Jail with his bail set at $500,000. A determination will be made at a later time as to whether this will be tried as a hate crime.
‘Under Texas law, punishments for certain crimes can be enhanced if a judge or jury concludes that the offense is a hate crime. There is, however, no enhancement for first-degree felonies, including murder, because such offenses already carry a penalty range of five to 99 years in prison.’
According to the Star-Tribune:
‘The prostitution charge against her was recently dismissed after she was placed on deferred-adjudication probation in connection with an unrelated theft charge.’
After all is said and done in this matter — one man is dead; another is headed to prison; another is probably headed for therapy; the stepdaughter is probably still wondering what the heck happened; and nobody wins. This is post-Trump America, a racist hotbed where people shoot people just because they’re having a bad day.
It needs to stop. We need to make it stop.
