Multiple Trump administration officials have found themselves under scrutiny in regard to their transportation habits. Those officials include Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin can now join the ranks of DeVos and Price, as he is now under investigation due to a short and costly flight.
Mnuchin flew into New York for a meeting at Trump Tower and decided, for reasons unknown, to use a government jet to travel the short distance from New York City to Washington D.C. Mnuchin’s decision to use a U.S. Air Force C-37 jet cost the American taxpayers $25,000 for a flight that spanned less than an hour.
Multiple officials told ABC News that the flight is now under review by department investigators alongside at least two separate requests for government travel involving Mnuchin.
Mnuchin’s flight to New York was to attend what turned out to be an infamous press conference at Trump Tower. During this press conference, the president would make a fool out of himself with some rather controversial remarks to the violence that had occurred in Charlottesville.
In a statement to ABC News, the Treasury Department said:
‘We welcome the [Office of the Inspector General’s] review and are ensuring the office has everything needed for a full evaluation of our travel procedures.’
Upon being asked for an explanation as to who ordered the government jet for Mnuchin’s short travel, a Department of Transportation spokesman was adamant that it did not come from his department. Two Defense Department officials told ABC News that records show that Mnuchin’s office did request the flight and later added Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to the request.
Ethical questions have been raised in the not so distant past in regards to Mnuchin’s travel habits. Last month Mnuchin and his wife, Louise Linton, used a military jet to travel to Louisville and Fort Knox, Kentucky. Coincidently, that was the same time the solar eclipse was happening, which raised questions as to if the couple’s business trip was just a chance to get an optimal view of one of nature’s wonders.
This is not the first time that Mnuchin has come under question for his weird habits with military jets. Investigators are also looking into why a wealthy man such as Mnuchin requested the use of a government jet to travel to Europe for his honeymoon in August. The honeymoon request was ultimately withdrawn, but questions still remained which prompted an investigation.
It is not hard to see why this unnecessarily short and costly trip upon a military jet would be cause for questions when it comes to Steven Mnuchin.
