The president’s belligerent campaign to pressure the NFL into firing players who choose to sit out the national anthem as a show of support for African Americans has turned all eyes on the NFL. On Sunday, in the latest show of unity on the NFL’s part, about thirty members of the San Francisco 49ers took a knee during the national anthem before their game against the Arizona Cardinals, which is apparently the largest demonstration on the team’s part to date.

It was former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick who first popularized the peaceful protest practice of taking a knee during the national anthem that has so irked the president.

The protest was fully the product of collective action on the part of the San Francisco 49ers; it wasn’t a subversive move on the part of any of the players.

The team released an official statement asserting that all of those who are a part of the team were on board with the move. The official statement also reiterated that the peaceful protest move is not meant as an affront to the flag or to the U.S. Armed Forces. Rather, the San Francisco 49ers players who took a knee on Sunday were simply exercising the right to self expression that the members of the U.S. Armed Forces fought and died for.

The team’s statement, as posted to Twitter, reads, in part:

‘For more than a year, members of our team have protested the oppression and social injustices still present in our society. While some may not have taken a knee or raised a fist, we have shared the desire to influence positive change. Today, our team chose to publicly display our unity in a new way and, in turn, urge others do the same.’

The president ignited a firestorm with his comments at an Alabama political rally that the “sons of bitches” who sit out the anthem should be fired.

The San Francisco 49ers players who sat out the anthem on Sunday are hardly the only individuals in a similar position to make a stand against the president’s belligerence. Other small groups of players have taken a knee since the president’s initial comments, and in some cases, entire teams have sat out the anthem.

The team posted a video of the players on the sideline to Twitter.
