As the country continues to try to make sense of the senseless loss of so many lives after the deadliest mass shooting in history in Las Vegas on Sunday night, new details put an even more startling spin on this already terrifying story.
Stephen Paddock, aged 64, opened fire on a country music concert from his Mandalay Bay hotel room, killing 59 people and injuring more than 500. While his motive remains a mystery at this point, new details confirmed by ABC News deepen the terror and confusion around this tragic night.
ABC News first confirmed that police believe Paddock may have not been alone in his actions on Sunday.
‘Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told a news conference Wednesday night there are indications that Paddock, a 64-year-old resident of Mesquite, Nevada, had some kind of help.’
At this time, Paddock is still believed to have been the lone shooter, but police believe someone else may have been assisting him. In the days prior to the shooting, Paddock was seen with another female who was not his girlfriend, the woman now being questioned by police upon her return from the Philippines, where she had been throughout the time Paddock was executing his plan.
Police are investigating whether reports that Paddock attempted to rent a hotel room across from the Mandalay Hotel on the night of the Life is Beautiful music festival at the end of September.
There are no answers yet as to the woman who told concert attendees at least 45 minutes before the shooting that they were all “going to f*cking die” and had to be escorted out of the venue.
In yet another new revelation, police say that Paddock is believed to have been scouting several hotel locations for the best vantage point in order to do the most damage. Some of those hotel rooms overlooking music festivals have been in Chicago and Boston.
‘Officials briefed on the investigation also told ABC News that Paddock booked hotel rooms in Chicago in early August during Lollapalooza music festival. One of the hotels where he had reservations was the Blackstone on South Michigan Avenue across from Grant Park, where the annual event took place.
‘A source with the Chicago Police Department confirmed to ABC News that Paddock had reservations at the Blackstone hotel.
‘It’s unclear whether Paddock actually traveled to Chicago at that time. Investigators believe Paddock may have also scouted out sites in Boston, the officials said.’
Police have also confirmed that they believe Paddock intended to flee the scene before police arrived and that the note found in his hotel room was not a suicide note, although details of the contents of that note have not yet been released.
Paddock’s girlfriend, Marilou Danley, remains firm in her assertion that she was not privy to any of the details or planning by the shooter prior to the events. With the massive number of firearms amassed by Paddock since 1982, it seems odd that no one close to him had any indication that Paddock may have been dangerous.
