President Trump takes threats to the public image of his administration very seriously — more seriously, in many cases, than the threats he actually should be occupying himself with addressing, like that of North Korea’s growing nuclear capabilities.
After apparent rumors that the president’s latest chief of staff, Gen. John Kelly, would soon abandon ship and be out of the White House, Trump took to Twitter to attack the media yet again. It’s not clear where the president got the idea that these rumors were circulating from.
Employing the same response that he uses for pretty much any allegation at all, Trump wrote on Twitter:
‘The Fake News is at it again, this time trying to hurt one of the finest people I know, General John Kelly, by saying he will soon be fired. This story is totally made up by the dishonest media. The Chief is doing a FANTASTIC job for me and, more importantly, for the USA!’
There is an interesting undertone to this message from the president, besides the obvious issue with him treating the American free press like a rabid dog or a serial killer and writing, “The Fake News is at it again.”
If you look at his message one way, the magnitude of the mess that Kelly has to deal with in the White House is clear. Kelly is “doing a FANTASTIC” job — dealing with all of the president’s nonsense. It doesn’t exactly take a rocket scientist to figure out that Gen. Kelly has his work cut out for him inside the White House; reports have circulated ever since he was taken on that he has tried, with only partial success, to cut down on the president’s belligerence.
