Members of Congress appear to huddle in their offices doing the will of their money makers and fearful of taking on Donald Trump. Although there are no more Senator Ted Kennedys demanding justice for the American people, there are a handful who have who have bucked the president. These are the heroes of Capitol Hill.
Senator John McCain of Arizona is one of those heroes, with his iconic thumb-down against a draconian definitely-not-health care bill, when he had brain cancer. Senator Susan Collins of Maine is another hero, staying on to fight for women’s health care rather than take the easier job of governor. Another hero is Bob Corker of Tennessee. All three are Republicans.
Corker had the courage to say openly what many Republicans are saying behind their closed doors. As early as August 17, 2017, the website Nooga.com reported that Corker said Donald Trump did not show “stability” or “competence:”
‘The President has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful.’
Then, this powerful chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee stepped forward, alone among all the Republicans to speak on camera, and he said that three men were all that stood between the country and “chaos,” according to CNN.
‘I think Secretary Tillerson, Secretary Mattis, and Chief of Staff Kelly are those people that help separate our country from chaos, and I support them very much.’
In an interview with MSNBC, The New York Times columnist Bret Stephens commented on former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon going after Corker. Bannon has been trying to enlist ultra-right competitors to take down anyone he believes is not loyal to Trump and the president’s agenda.
Just this weekend, Bannon came down hard on the Republican senator, saying he “trashed” the president’s armed forces when they were “in harm’s way,” according to The Washington Post:
‘Bob Corker has trashed the commander-in-chief of our armed forces while we have young men and women in harm’s way, right? He said he’s leading them on a path to World War III, that he’s not stable, that people have to keep him moderated.’
Stephens said on MSNBC that Corker was sounding “an alarm bell as loudly as he can,” claiming that Trump is not fit to hold the office of President of The United States. The columnist continued, saying that what the Tennessee senator did was the “epitome of patriotism:”
‘It’s particularly funny, by the way, coming from Bannon, who himself used to leak against the president when he was in the White House. It’s another example of the hypocrisy of the guy.’
