For the most part, President Obama has kept a low profile since he left the White House in January. However, he’s going to be in the spotlight a lot more now that he’s begun campaigning for Phil Murphy, his former ambassador to Germany and the Democratic nominee for governor of New Jersey.

When Obama took the stage at a campaign event on Thursday, he was met with chants of “four more years.”

Obama laughed in response to chants and then told the audience:

‘I will refer you to both the Constitution, as well as to Michelle Obama, to explain why that will not happen.’

MSNBC’s Kyle Griffin shared of video of Obama’s reception on Twitter on Thursday afternoon.

Almost everyone who responded to Griffin’s tweet made it clear that they also miss the former president.

In addition to explaining why he can’t continue to serve as president, Obama praised Murphy during his speech for being willing to step into a “pretty tough political climate.”

‘When Phil and his family said I’m ready to go, I’m willing to step out there and step into what can be a pretty tough political environment, I wasn’t surprised because I knew him. I knew their character.’

Obama also lamented the current state of politics in the U.S., although he didn’t ever mention President Trump by name:

‘Some of the politics we see now, we thought we put that to bed. That’s folks looking 50 years back, it’s the 21st century, not the 19th century.

‘We are rejecting a politics of division. We are rejecting a politics of fear. We are embracing a politics that says everybody deserves a chance, a politics that says everybody has dignity and worth; a politics of hope.’

He went on to tell the crowd to ignore the polls and focus on increasing grassroots support for Murphy, noting that they shouldn’t “take any election for granted.”

‘I don’t know if y’all noticed, but you can’t take any election for granted. I don’t care what the polls say. I don’t care what the pundits say.’
