For the past several years, Republicans have shouted, “But Benghazi,” any time Democratic presidential nominee and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came upon the scene. During the 2016 election, they consistently brought the issue of Benghazi up, and they called for investigation after investigation, doing their best to find a smoking gun that would indicate some guilt on Clinton’s and the Obama administration’s part.
However, Republicans have remained mostly silent on the recent deaths of four soldiers in Niger. The fact that four lives were lost has been lost in the circus-like attention that has been paid to the failure of a bumbling condolence call to Myeshia Johnson — the widow of Sgt. La David T. Johnson. However, surprisingly, one former Republican representative is calling for an investigation into the attacks in Niger, and you will never believe who it is.
Jason. Freaking. Chaffetz.
You heard that right. Jason Chaffetz, former chairman of the oversight & government reform committee, now turned Fox News contributor, took to Twitter and tweeted his call for an investigation.
‘Congress investigated Benghazi and Extortion 17. Congress should also investigate the deadly attack in Niger. #Truth’
The sad part is, something like this shouldn’t be surprising. There should be investigations into all tragedies like this. We need to gain whatever intel we can from them and then use it to prevent it from ever happening again. However, the investigations generally turn into witch hunts, rather than an expedition into finding solutions. Benghazi deserved an investigation. However, did it really deserve an investigation the Washington Post reported cost $6.77 million back in 2016? Maybe. However, if that’s the case, then every investigation into events like Benghazi and the recent attack in Niger should be investigated with equal thoroughness.
Twitter users responded to Chaffetz with mixed emotions. The fact is, some believe it’s a fake representation of someone finally growing a conscience. Others feel he still hasn’t expressed the same amount of outrage he did previously over Benghazi.
