While speaking to reporters Wednesday afternoon, President Trump made an all around strange assertion about the ongoing controversy over his treatment of anyone who doesn’t look, think, and act like him.

NBC reporter Hallie Jackson asked Trump “whether he thinks he should be more civil,” as she put it on Twitter after the fact, and the president — surprise surprise — responded by claiming that he’s already plenty “civil,” the media just makes it seem otherwise.

Trump told Jackson:

‘Well I think the press makes me more uncivil than I am. You know people don’t understand — I went to an Ivy League college, I was a nice student, I did very well. I’m a very intelligent person. The fact is… I really believe, I think the press creates a different image of Donald Trump than the real person.’

The president takes to Twitter almost daily to attack those he perceives as being against him — and the press
“creates a different image of Donald Trump than the real person”?

When the press plays videos of Donald Trump talking and reports on his public statements — including his tweets — that’s not “fake news,” that’s relaying the image of Donald Trump that he himself has established. Trump doesn’t get to just wish away the issues that he has created for himself just because he wants to; tweeting that a Florida Congresswoman is “wacky” because she criticized him isn’t exactly going to help his case that he is a good person.

In recent days, he has attacked individuals ranging from Florida’s Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who criticized his behavior on a phone call with the family of a fallen soldier, to outgoing Tennessee Senator Bob Corker, who asserted that Trump’s behavior is “debasing to our country.”

Corker is one of two GOP Senators  — the other being Arizona’s Jeff Flake — to come out strongly against the president in recent days, while simultaneously announcing their intent to not seek re-election.

Even still, the president insists that everything is fine and any problems are the media’s fault, like always.
