Election day in the Virginia race for governor is coming up fast with the Real Clear Politics average of available polling putting Democratic candidate Ralph Northam 3.9 percent ahead of his Republican challenger Ed Gillespie.
On Thursday morning, the president took to Twitter with a message of support for Gillespie and part of his reasoning for why Virginians should vote for him is noteworthy, to say the least.
‘Ed Gillespie will turn the really bad Virginia economy #’s around, and fast. Strong on crime, he might even save our great statues/heritage!’
It was in Virginia that thousands of white nationalists gathered earlier this fall for the stated purpose of protesting against a city’s plan to remove a statue honoring the slaveholder Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The protest sparked violence that ended with three dead.
Trump, shortly after the incident, proclaimed that there were “fine people” among the white nationalists and that blame for the violence rested with “both sides.”
Concurrently, he has refused to acknowledge many people’s legitimate concerns with Confederate statues staying up since, in most cases, they are literally monuments to racism. Now, with this tweet from the president, we get to see that he still thinks that way.
He added a follow-up message in support of Gillespie employing yet another form of conventional Trump-ian argument. He also lobbed a hardly verifiable personal attack at his opponent.
‘Ed Gillespie will be a great Governor of Virginia. His opponent doesn’t even show up to meetings/work, and will be VERY weak on crime!’
If anyone should be criticized for not showing up to work, it’s the president who spends what seems like every weekend on the golf course.
