Donald Trump has become known for his strange behavior during speeches during his time as president. There have been many blunders that the president has made during speeches, including looking and sounding almost robotic, to saying downright uncalled for statements during speeches.
Trump delivered a speech on Wednesday in the Diplomatic Room of the White House, recapping his nearly two-week-long Asia trip which he dubbed a grand success, of course, despite the many large protests that arose when in the countries he visited. One of the protests even involved protesters lighting a swastika-shaped effigy adorned with the president’s face on fire.
President Trump paused very suddenly during his speech and searched for water under his lectern. When he found that there was none there he stated, “thank you, they don’t have water. That’s okay,” and went to continue his speech. Reporters were quick to point out a bottle of Fiji water on a small table to the right of the president
Trump then turned, picked up the water with both hands and proceeded to take a quick, awkward sip before launching back into his thought.
He then continued giving a recap of his trips to Japan and South Korea, taking the time to complement their governments on their cooperation on trade and against North Korea. It didn’t take long before the president was struck with sudden thirst again, taking a second drink from his water bottle only minutes later.
The irony of the president’s actions lies with Trump’s remarks in 2013, when Republican Sen. Marco Rubio paused to do the exact same thing that Trump did during his Wednesday speech. Rubio paused during a rebuttal to the State of the Union to take a quick sip of water, which Trump took and ran with.
Trump logged onto Twitter promptly after Rubio’s speech just to give the Senator grief for taking a moment to hydrate. “Next time Marco Rubio should drink his water from a glass as opposed to a bottle—would have much less negative impact,” Trump tweeted.
Don later revisited this moment while Rubio and himself were rivals on the campaign trail, using it to mock Rubio.
Rubio, however, did not let this opportunity to fire back slip through his fingers. Rubio got the final word on Wednesday, with one epic tweet.
