Ah, America — the place you can go from stuffing your face with Thanksgiving food to beating someone up in a mall in a matter of hours.
The Friday after Thanksgiving is, of course, a day set aside to do a ton of holiday shopping, with innumerable sales popping up in stores across the country to try and get consumers to buy something and buy it now. Black Friday shopping doesn’t even have to wait until Friday to begin — many stores open late on Thanksgiving to facilitate those who just can’t wait any longer being able to get their shopping in.
In Alabama on Thursday night, some of those who just couldn’t wait any longer to complete their shopping had to go home early after fights forced the Riverchase Galleria mall to close. Police claim that the fights, which did not result in anyone having to be transported to the hospital, were of a “personal nature” and “not over sales,” AL.com reports.
Besides the fighting, there were also reports of gunshots at the mall, but officers say that they believe someone was setting off fireworks nearby.
Lt. Keith Czeskleba of the local police force released a statement on what transpired late Thursday night, reading, in part:
‘Last night at approximately 11:20 P.M., Hoover Police responded to a fight outside of Buckle at the Riverchase Galleria. Officers arrived to find two juvenile females engaged in a physical altercation with a group of by-standers watching. The participants were separated and identified by officers. They were treated by paramedics for minor injuries. The fight was not related to post-Thanksgiving sales. No arrests were made in this incident.’
Czeskleba added that “Hoover Police will have extra officers on site at our retail areas throughout the holiday season to ensure the safety and security of the patrons and stores in our city.”
Because of the incidents late Thursday, the mall closed forty minutes ahead of schedule; it had opened at 6 PM and was set to close at midnight. The incidents did not affect the mall’s Friday operations.

A disturbing side note to this story is found in the comments section of the above video on YouTube.
Commenters — as you can see — immediately took to pointing out the race of those involved in the fighting, when it is completely irrelevant to the situation. According to the police, the people involved in the fighting were juveniles — and yet, that doesn’t stop internet users from using one instance of juveniles being idiots to generalize about an entire race of people, feeding into the culture that sparked the deaths of untold numbers of people because of slavery.
Looking at the YouTube comments section makes it make more sense that Donald Trump managed to get enough votes to be elected president. He built virtually his entire political platform on racism, a racism that he’s put in display time and time again since taking office, and the people of the YouTube comments section got behind him in sufficient number to put him in the White House.
