Former Trump associate Michael Flynn was charged this morning with lying to the White House. As expectations arose that Flynn had struck some type of plea deal, Americans didn’t have to wait long before Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the the FBI by intentionally making false, fraudulent statements.
According to The New York Times, Michael Flynn, Trump’s Ex-National Security Adviser, lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding a conversation he’d had with the Russian ambassador nearly a year ago, last December.
As he was escorted from the courtroom, onlookers chanted “Lock him up!” repeatedly.
These conversations with Russian diplomat Sergey I. Kislyak regarded foreign policy. There is also evidence that Trump aides facilitated these conversations. This corroborates Flynn’s claim. He said earlier that Trump associates actually directed him to have meetings and conversations with the Russians.
Even throughout all of this, it is unclear what Trump knew about the conversations his affiliates had with the Russians.
In early November, Michael Flynn was being investigated for an email exchange that took place between Flynn’s lobbying company, The Flynn Intel Group, and Dana Rohrabacher, who is known for his pro-Russian rhetoric. Later, the grand jury convened by Robert Mueller is set to question Michael Flynn’s associates.
This isn’t the first time that associates of The Flynn Intel Group have been in hot water. Paul Manafort and Rick Gates were both indicted for tax fraud and money laundering associated with their work in lobbying.
Flynn was ultimately fired after misleading Mike Pence regarding his communications with a Russian.
More and more Trump associates are showing links to the Russians, and Robert Mueller is right on their tails. It’s possible that the grand jury may be able to expose even more critical information regarding Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election. While the president is yet to face any charges, it’s clear that some receive satisfaction knowing that, this morning, justice was served to Michael Flynn.
