It has practically been a tradition for presidents to give their pets a new home in the White House. However, Trump is the only president in 150 years not to have a pet. Perhaps, this just reinforces what many people already know about his narcissistic personality. However, Vice President Mike Pence does have pets and Trump’s reaction to him wanting to bring them to Washington was quite ridiculous.
According to The Washington Examiner:
‘President Trump was embarrassed when he found out in January that Vice President Mike Pence was bringing his family pets to the Naval Observatory to live with him, according to a report Tuesday.’
An adviser told The Atlantic:
‘He was embarrassed by it; he thought it was so low class. He thinks the Pences are yokels.’
When the Pences moved into the Naval Observatory, which has served as the residence for the vice president’s family for decades, the Pence family’s pets included two cats, a rabbit, and a snake. Soon after, one of their cats died and they adopted a new kitten and puppy. Pence’s rabbit, Marlon Bundo, has become the most famous of all of them and even has his own Instagram account.
Trump has been critical of Pence throughout his presidency and has especially mocked his ultra conservative views on abortion and LGBT rights. Once during a discussion about gay rights, Trump pointed at Pence and said:
‘Don’t ask that guy – he wants to hang them all!’
According to the New York Post:
‘Pence, who was raised a Catholic but later became an evangelical Christian with his wife Karen, is often the butt of Trump’s jokes. When people meet with the president after stopping by Pence’s office, he will ask, “Did Mike make you pray?”’
‘You see? You’ve wasted all this time and energy on it, and it’s not going to end abortion anyway.’
One could probably wager a hefty amount that the Pence family’s pets are by far the best thing in Washington right now.
