This morning, Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka took to Twitter to applaud her father’s administration. The tweet featured a statistic asserting that the Trump Administration is doing a lot for Latino Americans. Specifically, Ivanka seems to believe that Donald trump has helped more Latino Americans get jobs, and lowered the unemployment rate for this demographic.
According to the Tweet, the unemployment rate for Latino Americans is lower now under the Trump administration then it’s been under any other administration in history.
What makes Ivanka’s claim that the Trump Administration is pro-Latino surprising is the fact that much of Donald Trump’s rhetoric has been fairly racist toward Latinos. For example, at a campaign speech way back in 2016, Donald Trump made various comments about Mexican immigrants which have now become infamous.
‘When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.’
It’s inarguable that Trump was connecting people of Hispanic descent to issues such as crime, drugs and violence. These statements are a far cry from Ivanka’s tweet, which suggests that the Trump Administration is doing their best to help Latino Americans.
Most Americans are also familiar with Trump’s notorious ‘build a wall’ comments. While on the campaign trail, Donald Trump promised his supporters that he would build a wall on the border between the United States and Mexico in order to keep Mexican immigrants out of the United States.
Many of the scandals within the Trump campaign and modern politics have revolved around Twitter. Donald Trump, who has millions of Twitter followers, often Tweets his concerns and frustrations. In addition to this, many of those who oppose Trump also use Twitter as a platform to express their disapproval of the 45th president of the United States. James Comey is perhaps one of Donald Trump’s most faithful faces of opposition on Twitter. On several occasions, the former FBI director took to Twitter to tweet quotes that denounce or criticize the president’s behavior. While it is clear that Trump has several avid critics on Twitter, it seems like he also has Twitter users who continue to support him. In this case, his daughter, Ivanka Trump, seems to be one of those people. She seems to have overlooked many of her father’s actions, and maintained that he is a hero for Latino Americans. However, a deeper look into Donald Trump’s past shows that he may not be quite the hero Ivanka has made him out to be. There are numerous examples of Donald Trump disrespecting Latino Americans, and a single statistic does not erase all of the president’s comments and behavior.
Donald Trump also insinuated that a judge would do an inadequate job at handling the Trump University case because of his”Mexican heritage.” Most recently, the Trump Administration has made efforts to rescind the Dream Act and prevent Latino immigrants from remaining in the U.S. legally with their American born children.
But remember, according to Ivanka Trump, the Trump administration is “working hard to create opportunities for all Americans.”
