If there’s one thing that’s become clear about the president in the time that the United States of America as a whole has known him, it’s that he’s completely disconnected himself from reality. In that light, he has continuously insisted that the allegations that Russia meddled in our 2016 presidential election — the one that he won — are not as credible as they really are.
His denial of reality has put him at odds with numerous members of his administration, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who – although he hasn’t exactly proven to be an effective leader in his own right – has been left out in the cold by the president.
In a meeting on Tuesday, Tillerson put himself at odds with the president yet again, rightfully asserting that it is a fact that Russia sought to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, dragging down Hillary Clinton and bolstering Donald Trump. He told officials that Russia “interfered in democratic processes here.”
It’s strange for this declaration of a simple fact to put the secretary of state at odds with the president, and it’s not like he should get brownie points for a simple observation of reality, yet here we remain anyway.
The Daily Beast reports that Tillerson’s assertion that Russia did, in fact, meddle in the 2016 U.S. presidential election isn’t even the only marked departure from the stated opinions of the president that was in his Tuesday remarks.
According to an individual described simply as “a State Department official,” Tillerson also said, speaking of the landmark Iran Nuclear Deal reached in the closing years of the Obama Administration that “for the time being, we are in the agreement.” Trump has sought to discredit that deal.
The official relaying information to The Daily Beast did so “in real time,” according to the publication, which reports that the purpose for the “town hall” held by Tillerson on Tuesday wasn’t immediately clear.
At times, it got a bit odd, like when he praised the “your word is your bond” credo of “the West.”
Even though Tillerson put himself at odds with the president through his acknowledgement of Russian election interference, he also engaged in what the official speaking to The Daily Beast called “Trump ass-kissing.” Tillerson, according to the official, “seems totally unaware that much of the strategy remained on autopilot when this administration took office,” praising Trump for his strategy in Afghanistan and against ISIS even though much of it has just been to continue on with what the Obama administration was doing.
It’s not as though Tillerson has any reason to know what he’s doing in government; in his private life before taking on his present role, he was an oil executive.
The diplomat speaking to The Daily Beast was enraged at just how aloof Tillerson is when it comes to the concerns of the State Department, and he’s not alone.
The unnamed individual commented of Tillerson:
‘He is f*cking tone deaf and has zero awareness of how miserable many people are. He is so f*cking patronizing. He’s talking about making sure everyone can achieve their potential… He is saying he enjoys the people, getting to know the people, which is a total bag of sh*t.’
Tillerson has positioned himself in between a rock and a hard place, since it’s not as though he has a passionate ally in the president.
Although he halfheartedly denied the reports, Tillerson was reported back in October to have quipped that the president is a “f*cking moron.”
