The president took to Twitter this Thursday, as he does so many days, with a belligerent message for the American people, insisting that everything is getting along just fine when it most certainly is not.
The latest topic of his Twitter-ranting is the GOP’s proposed massive changes to the nation’s tax system.
Captioning a clip of some of his recent remarks, he wrote, in part:
‘As a candidate, I promised we would pass a massive tax cut for the everyday, working Americans. If you make your voices heard, this moment will be forever remembered as a great new beginning – the dawn of a brilliant American future shining with PATRIOTISM, PROSPERITY AND PRIDE!’

After both the House and the Senate managed to pass a tax reform plan, this past Wednesday party leaders struck a deal to resolve differences between the two measures in a new plan that could be voted upon “as soon as next week,” according to CNN.
The plan has been widely described as a gift for wealthy business owners at the expense of lower-income Americans, but in Trump World, everything is getting along just fine.
For one, when it comes to problems with the GOP’s plan, retained in the tentative deal struck Wednesday is a repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s so-called individual mandate, which dictates that essentially every American have health care. For that mandate to be repealed would mean that those who acutely need health care would have to pay more, since those who don’t need it in the here and now would no longer be obligated to pay into the system.
Insurance companies could, if they are receiving less money from consumers, have even more of an incentive to leave the market than they already do thanks to the president working to stop government payments to those companies.
On top of all of this, taxpayers could lose their tax deduction for having health care if they are no longer able to pay for it.
There’s another problem, too. The deal struck by GOP leadership, although it lowers taxes for wealthy corporation heads, caps the deduction for state and local property taxes at $10,000.
That change, if enacted, would spike people’s taxes around the country, as Business Insider explains. People of New York City — Donald Trump’s own town — would be among those suffering with “more than one out of every five households” currently paying more than $10,000 annually in property taxes. Other areas in which a significant proportion of people currently pay more than $10,000 annually in property taxes and thus would be hit by the enacting of Trump’s plan include Houston, San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston.
None of that even covers Trump’s assertion that under his leadership, the future of the United States will be marked by “PATRIOTISM, PROSPERITY AND PRIDE!”
We’ve already seen what Trump’s definition of patriotism is. Trump has claimed that the free press is the “enemy of the American people,” indicating that his vision of a “great” America is one in which everyone listens to him and him alone.
He seems to have missed the memo that he ran for president of the United States of America and not Supreme Leader of some far off totalitarian country.
