Donald Trump has refused to accept that the Kremlin meddled in the U.S. 2016 presidential election, and that is leaving the nation wide open for a Russian 2018 election repeat performance. One thing we have learned from the new U.S. president is that he projects, accusing others of what he has done himself. The Russian President Vladimir Putin learned that lesson from him too, in a big way.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, says now that the U.S. has been interfering with their elections. She said that supporting Alexei Navalny, who was the opposition to President Vladimir Putin, was the basis for their accusation, according to Business Insider:

‘This State Department statement, which I’m sure will be repeated, is a direct interference in our electoral process and internal affairs.’

Last week, Russia’s Election Commission forbade Navalny from running. The commission said that the government had convicted him of embezzlement, and that disqualified him.

However, the European Court of Human Rights said that Navalny’s conviction was both “unreasonable” and “arbitrary.”

Zakharova’s statement on Facebook Tuesday said their accusation was based upon the  U.S. State Department’s criticism of Russia removing Navalny from the presidential race:

‘This State Department statement, which I’m sure will be repeated, is a direct interference in our electoral process and internal affairs.’

A statement from the U.S. State Department’s spokesperson Tuesday night responded to the Russian’s accusations, according to Business Insider. The department was concerned about:

‘Ongoing crackdown against independent voices, from journalists to civil society activists and opposition politicians. These actions indicate the Russian government has failed to protect space in Russia for the exercise of human rights and fundamental freedoms.’

The U.S. State Department spokesperson continued:

‘More broadly, we urge the government of Russia to hold genuine elections that are transparent, fair, and free and that guarantee the free expression of the will of the people, consistent with its international human rights obligations.’

The Russian spokesperson responded:

‘And these people expressed outrage over alleged Russian “interference” in their electoral process for an entire year?! The funniest thing is that these are the same people who just tagged RT and Sputnik as foreign agents, who are harassing Russian media around the world and who are investing huge amounts of money into ‘countering Russian propaganda which is how they label anyone who they disagree with.’

U.S. intelligence reported, in a declassified document, that Putin had ordered members of the Russian government to use:

‘Cyber tools and media campaigns to influence US public opinion (and) undermine public faith in the US democratic process.’

The document continued, saying in March 2016 these Russian government-linked actors:

‘Began openly supporting President-elect Trump’s candidacy in media aimed at English-speaking audiences.’

The Russians used their media outlets, Sputnik and RT, as:

‘The Kremlin’s principal international propaganda outlet.’

The U.S. Justice Department required Russia to register both of these outlets and their U.S. affiliates as foreign agents in November.

The man who has had the enormous courage to run against Putin,  Alexei Navalny, is an activist and attorney. He replaced Boris Nemtsov as head of Russia’s democratic opposition after Nemtsov was assassinated “in the shadow of the Kremlin.”

Putin has never said Navalny’s name. He did say:

‘Do you want us to have coup attempts here? We’ve already been through all that. You want to go back to that? I am sure that the overwhelming majority of Russian citizens do not want this and will not stand for it.’

Navalny posted a video on his blog, saying:

‘We are announcing a voters’ strike. The procedure in which we are invited to participate is not an election. It involves only Putin and those candidates whom he personally chose, who do not pose a slightest threat to him.’
