Mr. Trump cries “fakes news” any time a news report is published that he doesn’t like. He has tried to make “fake news” fashionable by pitting different media outlets against one another especially Fox News and CNN. Pat Garofalo writes:
‘Thanks to Trump and others like him who wield “fake news” as a weapon, the phrase has been utterly divorced from its original meaning. Once upon a time, it meant writings that were crafted to mislead by those with malicious intent; trolls wanted readers to click on their ridiculous websites, so they made up “news” out of whole cloth to dupe the gullible. Now, Trump and his ilk use “fake news” to describe real efforts by real news organizations that they simply don’t like.’
Now, he is asking the American people to help determine which news network should receive the Fake News Trophy. About a month ago, he posted this tweet:
On Thursday, The “Trump Make America Great Again Committee” issued an email to his supporters, saying:
‘At President Trump’s request, we are holding a contest to name the 2017 KING of Fake News. And we want to hear from you.’
The candidates listed in the email were:
A Rasmussen Poll that was conducted after Trump published that tweet in November, found that the most Americans would award Fox News the trophy over any other network. Trump has long-attacked CNN, ABC News, and other networks while insanely praising Fox News. Mr. Trump has made numerous appearances on Fox. People should note that the candidates listed in Trump’s above email were from networks that either retracted, amended, or apologized for stories they published.
According to Rasmussen Reports:
‘The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 65% of Likely U.S. Voters consider fake news a big problem, with 42% who say it’s a Very Big one. Thirty-two percent (32%) disagree, but that includes only 16% who believe fake news is not a big problem at all.’
Trump said that the Fake News Trophy should be awarded for the worst coverage of his presidency and of course, left Fox News out of the running for the honor. He believes Fox News is the only network that gives him fair coverage. According to the poll, 40 percent of all voters thought should Fox News should receive the Fake News Trophy. It was also reported:
‘CNN is in second place with 25% support, followed by MSNBC (9%), ABC (4%), CBS (3%) and NBC (2%). Six percent (6%) say the award should go to someone else, and 11% are undecided.
‘A closer look finds that while 53% of Democrats and a plurality (42%) of voters not affiliated with either major party declare Fox News the winner, just 24% of Republicans agree. Forty percent (40%) of GOP voters opt instead for CNN, a view shared by just 13% of Democrats and 24% of unaffiliateds.’
Fifty-one percent of all voters think the current media coverage of political issues and events is worse than it has been in the past. According to Rasmussen Reports:
‘Voters admit America is a more divided place these days, and Trump supporters overwhelmingly agree with the president that the media is to blame. But Trump opponents just as strongly disagree.’
The Rasmussen Poll also noted:
‘Among voters who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing, 85% say fake news is a Very Big problem; 53% think CNN should win the first annual Fake News Trophy, while 23% say that honor should go to MSNBC. Just 21% of voters who Strongly Disapprove of the president’s job performance regard fake news as a Very Big problem. Among these voters, 67% say Fox News should take home the fake news honors, and no one else is even close.’
Fox News should definitely win the trophy. There are plenty of examples from Fox that could have been listed in Trump’s email, but for obvious reasons, they were not.
Here is what Twitter thinks of Trump’s “Fake News Trophy” of the year:
