When Donald Trump lumbers to the podium to give his state of the union address on Tuesday, January 30th, be prepared to hear lies, conspiracy theories, braggadocio, and an hour of blathering that will often make no sense. If you listen closely enough, and have a translator, you may even hear some of the lies, conspiracy theories, and braggadocio used all in the same run-on sentence. It will sound like one great big Trump rally given somewhere in the Deep South.
By the time he’s finished speaking, his followers, like all good brainwashed cult members, will think they’ve heard the best speech that’s ever been given. The evangelical right will feel as if they’ve just listened to the 21st century version of the sermon on the mount. They will believe every single word Trump says. Trump will soak in their adoration like a sponge. He’ll pay no mind to the black-clad members of Congress sitting and quietly protesting his treatment of women. Likewise he’ll fail to see the people protesting him on his way to the Capitol Building.
As a semi-protest of their own, a group of well-known anti-Trump celebrity protesters will be giving a People’s State of the Union on Monday, January 29th. The celebrities include Mark Ruffalo, Whoopi Goldberg, Cynthia Nixon, Rosie Perez, Common, Andra Day, Kathy Najimy, Zoe Kravitz, Michael Moore, Wanda Sykes, and others. Mark Ruffalo told People magazine,
‘In essence, it’s a better reflection of our state of the union based on a more populist point of view, based on the people’s point of view. I think it’s important because we have a president who has a difficult time with the truth, who has a radical, divisive agenda, and spends an enormous amount of time focusing on the negative and hopelessness and despair.’
The event will be hosted by the new organization We Stand United along with MoveOn.org Political Action and Stand Up America. Julia Walsh, the campaign director for We Stand United had this to say:
‘The event is intended not only as a celebration and a look back on this resistance movement for the past year, but to look ahead. So no matter what the president says on Tuesday, we all know what we’re going to be doing from Monday night on. We’re going to continue to work together, we’re going to continue to build this broad-based movement across many different areas, and we’re going to win back Congress. This night is meant to be inspiring and empowering to all the people across this country that care about the state of this country and want to see it change.’
‘We’re all going to work together across all different movements to make sure that we win back Congress in 2018 and hold this president in check.’
Representatives of United We Dream, AFSCME, Women’s March, and Planned Parenthood will also be in attendance. Ruffalo said the event will be the “mother of all movements” and he’s excited that so many people and organizations will be coming together to work toward this cause.
