The Russia scandal continues to unfold in 2018 whether the president likes it or not, with a vast majority of the media’s focus on the revelations about the scandal that continue to trickle out of Washington, D.C., as the days and weeks go by.

One of the latest revelations to come out about the Russia scandal is the report that last summer, the president moved to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller, only stopped by top White House lawyer Don McGahn threatening to quit in protest.

This revelation has prompted a new round of allegations against the president of obstruction of justice. It would be ironic if the president ended up going down for that, with him having become so obsessed with keeping his public image as pristine in his own mind as possible that he’s sent it to the gutter through refusing to submit to an investigation into crimes he’s supposedly innocent of.

Among the voices speaking out against the president is now South Carolina Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who has interestingly gone back and forth in his publicly expressed opinions of Donald Trump.

He wasn’t fiery in his condemnation of the president, but he insisted during an appearance on ABC this Sunday that Special Counsel Mueller should look into reports that the president sought to put an end to his investigation.

He told host Martha Raddatz:

‘I believe it’s something that Mueller should look at. We’re not going to just say it’s fake news and move on. Mueller is the best person to look at it, and not me opine about something I don’t know. I’m sure that there will be an investigation around whether or not President Trump did try and fire Mr. Mueller. We know that he didn’t fire Mr. Mueller. We know that if he tried to; it would be the end of his presidency. So at the end of the day let Mr. Mueller do his job.’

The president, for his part, has in fact responded to the reports about him attempting to fire Mueller as the South Carolina Senator indicated, calling them “fake news.”

Trump often attempts to discredit negative news reports about him as “fake news.” The fact that he so often makes stuff up and dismisses factual news reports as fiction means that he’s long been discredited when it comes to these kinds of situations. In other words, there’s little reason to believe his assertions that the reports about his attempts to fire Mueller are just “fake news.”

This situation isn’t the first in which the president has drawn accusations of obstruction of justice.

Among the most infamous instances in which he drew such accusations is his abrupt dismissal of FBI Director James Comey last year. Comey, at the time of his firing, was leading the Russia investigation.

Trump is also alleged to have tried to pressure Comey to conduct the Russia investigation according to his wishes while still on the job.

These questions and more are likely on the agenda for Trump’s sitdown with Mueller’s team, which will likely take place soon.
