Mr. Trump has been embroiled in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation for several months now, and things are becoming increasingly worse for him. So far, Trump has done everything to try to deflect attention from the situation, but it looks like things are gradually catching up with him.
Most recently, on his flight to Davos for the World Economic Forum, Trump exploded in anger after learning that “a top Justice Department official had warned against releasing a memo that could undercut the probe.” According to Bloomberg:
‘Trump erupted in anger while traveling to Davos after learning that Associate Attorney General Stephen Boyd warned that it would be “extraordinarily reckless” to release a classified memo written by House Republican staffers. The memo outlines alleged misdeeds at the FBI and Justice Department related to the Russia investigation.’
Trump sees this an example of John Kelly and the Justice Department trying to undermine him. Trump and most Republicans see Mueller’s investigation as a politically motivated agenda. Bloomberg also reported:
‘Trump’s outburst capped a week where Trump and senior White House officials personally reproached Attorney General Jeff Sessions and asked White House Chief of Staff John Kelly to speak to others — episodes that illustrate Trump’s preoccupation with the Justice Department, according to two of the people.’
Trump has also threatened Sessions and other staff with their jobs if they don’t excel, which seems to mean that they need to do everything he wants them to do. This definitely points to the fact that the pressure is mounting on Trump in the fact of the Russia probe, and he’s getting desperate at this point. Trump acts like a child who has misbehaving at school and then lost his television watching privileges.
Trump also met with Sessions and FBI Director Christopher Wray last Monday to discuss missing text messages sent between two FBI agents. These agents had expressed anti-Trump views. One of the agents left the investigation and Mueller removed the other after finding out about the texts.
According to Bloomberg:
‘Kelly held separate meetings or phone calls with senior Justice Department officials last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to convey Trump’s displeasure and lecture them on the White House’s expectations, according to the people. Kelly has taken to ending such conversations with a disclaimer that the White House isn’t expecting officials to do anything illegal or unethical.’
John Kelly erupted at Justice Department officials on Thursday over the decision to send the letter. So far, Trump’s attorneys have been cooperating at this point, but they are gradually becoming frustrated and tired of the whole mess. At this point, Mueller is getting ready to wrap his obstruction of justice part of the investigation, but the whole endeavor will take at least another several months.
‘Trump’s anger was exacerbated by reports last week that the president had wanted to fire Mueller last June. The New York Times reported Thursday that the pressure to fire Mueller was averted after White House counsel Don McGahn made clear he would resign before carrying out such an order.’
