The controversial memo alleging that the FBI illegally wiretapped one member of Trump’s campaign team, Carter Page, has caused a political firestorm. While its impact cannot yet fully be understood until the information in it is public, Trump has promised “100 percent” to release it.

What he is releasing, however, is not what Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee voted along party lines to send to his desk for review.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, drafted a letter to Nunes on Wednesday night when it was discovered that Nunes made changes to the memo that have not been seen or voted on by the committee. Should Trump decide to release it, it will not be the memo that was approved during the vote.

According to the LA Times:

‘In a letter to Nunes, Schiff wrote that “material changes” were made to the four-page classified document that members of Congress were able to read before the GOP-led House Intelligence Committee voted along party lines Monday to release it.

‘The vote sent the memo to the White House, giving President Trump five days to decide whether to object to its release. The president has signaled that the document should be made public, but Schiff said the process needs to restart.

‘“The White House has…  been reviewing a document since Monday night that the Committee never approved for public release,” Schiff wrote in his letter.’

The accusation follows the news that the FBI, led by the Trump-appointed Director Christopher Wray along with Deputy Attorney General of the Department of Justice Rod Rosenstein, told Chief of Staff John Kelly their concerns about its accuracy. The FBI released a rare statement earlier on Wednesday about those concerns.

‘A memo by House Republicans about the Trump-Russia investigation is inaccurate and misleading, the FBI said in an unusual statement Wednesday, hours after President Donald Trump assured a lawmaker he planned to allow the document to become public.

‘“We have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy,” the FBI said.’

The memo, written by Nunes but based solely on Trey Gowdy’s review of the materials it uses as proof of the allegations against the FBI, is expected to be released to the public on Thursday. Gowdy announced earlier on Wednesday that he would not be seeking reelection to the House of Representatives in a surprise move.
