Fascist and authoritarian regime leaders absolutely love to have their egos stroked. Leaders like Kim Jong Un, Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein, and Vladimir Putin love nothing more than a good ol’ military parade. The fascist or authoritarian leaders use the military parade as nothing but a show of force to their own citizens letting them know that their leaders are not to be trifled with. Of course it’s also a way for the military to show their adoration to their dear leader too.
These parades are usually televised on the world stage, and the leader of the country can be seen standing front and center, where they can hog as much publicity as possible. There’s usually a lot of pomp and circumstance where the military turn en masse and salute their leader, which swells his heart with pride.
In an attempt to make himself look like a strong leader, Donald Trump has now ordered that our military throw a parade for him, too. A lot of people have a lot of problems with Trump using our military this way.
Take Major General (Ret) Paul Eaton, for example. Today, he released a letter he penned about Trump’s proposed parade.
‘Donald Trump has continually shown himself to have authoritarian tendencies, and this is just another worrisome example.
‘For someone who just declared that it was “treasonous” to not applaud him, and for someone who has, in the past, admired the tactics of everyone from Saddam Hussein to Vladimir Putin, it is clear that a military parade isn’t about saluting the military–it is about making a display of the military saluting him.
‘The military is not Donald Trump’s to use and abuse in this way. Our military is the very best in the world–they are not to be reduced to stagecraft to prop up Donald Trump’s image. Any commander in chief who respects the traditions of the military would understand that.
Unfortunately, we do not have a commander in chief, right now, as much as we have a wannabe banana republic strongman.‘
Those are some pretty strong words coming from a career military man. One gets the impression that he’s not a big fan of Trump. But who can blame him? Trump is nothing but a blowhard so full of hot air that nothing is surprising coming out of his mouth anymore.
I think Donald Trump needs his own special commander-in-chief uniform, don't you? Something with some fancy epaulets, several yards of ribbons, and a bejeweled medal at his throat the size of a saucer. Also, a sassy little beret. Definitely jodhpurs, boots and a swagger stick.

Our country has had a few military parades in the past, but almost all of them came after we had won one war or another. There was one before we sent our boys off to fight in WWII, then again after we won the war. There were a couple during inaugurations and another after our success in the 1991 Gulf War. But that was the last one. Now authoritarian Trump wants to throw another one.
Money is especially tight right now, since Trump’s tax scam just went into effect. Our debt is climbing quickly and the deficit has flown through the roof. The Republicans in congress are preparing to start making deep cuts to the social safety net, which will hurt a lot of people badly. A military parade is very expensive, so is now really the time to waste money throwing a parade in Donald Trump’s honor? As the most corrupt, ineffective president this country has ever seen, the only parade Donald Trump should be a part of is a parade out of the White House and into obscurity…or perhaps a nice warm jail cell, depending on how things go with Bob Mueller.
