Donald Trump woke up to the news of yet another indictment in the Russian collusion investigation on Tuesday, and his reaction was nothing less than bizarre. It’s not like 17 people were killed in a school today, he’s truly upset over this story.
News of the indictment of Alex Van Der Zwaan, as associate of the indicted former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates, hit the news on Tuesday morning. Van Der Zwaan, as Gates already has, is expected plead guilty in exchange for some kind of plea deal on Tuesday afternoon.
The news follows the indictments of 13 Russians and three Russian companies for their coordinated effort to influence the 2016 presidential election. The key word is “influence,” not “rig.” While there have been efforts to hack into voter registration data, no one yet has accused Trump of colluding with Russia in those efforts. The investigation is in regards to collusion: as in, Trump and his presidential campaign worked with Russian government operatives to leak damning information on Hillary Clinton during the campaigns in exchange for something that Trump promised them. Perhaps they promised to end the Magnitsky Act, which has cost Putin and his Russian oligarch friends a lot of money? Maybe they promised an end of the Prevezon Case, which has also tied up Russian oligarch money and then somehow magically disappeared following Trump’s election?
Regardless, Mueller appears to be getting much closer, and Trump’s reaction says it all.
