This time there is something different happening after the latest mass shooting. No, the politicians remain in bed with the National Rifle Association (NRA) and its money. No, Donald Trump will not make substantial differences after the NRA gave him $30 million, This is about real change.
A 19-year-old Parkland, FL man carried an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle into the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and plowed bullets through 14 students and three adults. During the carnage, several students had the presence of mind to take real-time videos of the massacre. There is no longer a way hide what guns do to the human body and spirit.
The surviving students have taken their grief and anger and focused it into a movement to change the gun laws. They are well-spoken and earnest, and that has become contagious.
The New York Times is running a huge ad holding legislators to task. Edward-Isaac Dovere tweeted about that ad:
‘Here’s the 2 page, $230,000 Everytown ad running in the New York Times tomorrow, listing phone numbers of members of Congress to call.’
Senior Diego Pfeiffer said:
‘This isn’t about school shootings. This isn’t about violence anymore. This is about hope. This is about moving forward.’
Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Guns Sense in America bought the ads. These two advocates for tougher gun laws list around 100 Congress members who took NRA money.
The ad has a photo of the students leaving single-file from the school and quotes a Parkland student, who is asking the adults to “get something done.”
These two group called out the legislators who took NRA money then “refuse to take action” for sensible gun control. Founder of Moms Demand Action for Guns Sense in America, Shannon Watts, had this to say about the politicians who do nothing to prevent gun violence:
‘(They are) complicit in the deaths of our children.’
Sixteen-year-old Parkland student, Lizzie Eaton, commented on the Florida House vote for guns:
‘(It was a) really heartbreaking vote. (We were) trying to get our voices out to the Democrats and Republicans. We’re not going to stop. We’re going to keep fighting for what we believe in. We’re not going to let this bring us down.’
The Twitter world went wild. Here are some of our favorites:
