The movie “Black Panther” was released over the three-day President’s Day weekend and has already achieved the status of being the fifth biggest opening ever. According to The Washington Post:
‘The Disney/Marvel movie overperformed massively by grossing $201.7 million over the three-day weekend, according to Box Office Mojo — the biggest domestic debut for any film that’s not a character team-up movie or part of a sequel trilogy.’
Many people have given nothing but rave reviews of the movie. On Monday, former first lady Michelle Obama tweeted her own stellar review of the movie:
Several Democratic lawmakers also posted on Twitter about seeing the film:
Members of the activist group, Electoral Justice Project, are using the film a motivator for a voter registration drive targeting African-Americans with a social media campaign.
“Black Panther” is the first Marvel movie to feature a majority-black cast. According to Variety:
‘On Sunday, Disney estimated that “Black Panther” would take in $218 million for Presidents Day weekend, then revised that number upward on Monday morning by an astounding $17 million. The movie finished Sunday with a $60.1 million — the second best Sunday in industry history, just slightly behind 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” record of $60.6 million.’
“Black Panther” plowed past the record for a President’s Day Weekend debut, beating “Deadpool’s” 2016 mark of $152 million. It is projected that movie-going for the 4-day period would hit around $340 million. The mark in 2016 was $278 million. It is also projected that “Black Panther” will dominate the screen for the next several weeks.
