Over the last year, it has been fairly clear that President Trump has a personal vendetta, for whatever reasons, against the current immigration policy in the country. Through his various calls for policy reform, Trump has aimed to dismantle the very fabrics that gave America its fundamental values and ideals, looking to turn away as many refugees, immigrants, and asylum-seekers as possible. In promoting the anti-immigrant agenda, certain actions taken by the Trump administration can be seen as outright abhorrent, especially in regards to the mistreatment of those looking to live a fully legal and compliant lifestyle in the country.
Most recently, reports have emerged regarding a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which is suing the Trump administration for their behavior and treatment of a Congolese mother and daughter pair, both of whom are asylum-seekers in the country. According to an article written by the Associated Press:
‘The mother and daughter entered the U.S. together in California in November and turned themselves into U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents. Initially, the two were kept together. But about five days after they entered the U.S., the child was taken away “screaming and crying, pleading with guards not to take her away from her mother,” according to a lawsuit filed in federal court in San Diego.’
Our clients' detention follows reports that Trump is separating border-crossing parents from kids as a way to scare those seeking refuge in the U.S.

Currently, the Congolese mother is being held in a facility in San Diego, while immigration officials have relocated her daughter to another holding facility on nearly the other side of the country, in Chicago. Despite the fact that these two asylum-seekers aimed to abide by the legal guidelines of the country, it is clear that the Trump administration has put a target on the backs of immigrants, even in the case of those fleeing oppressive circumstances.
BREAKING: The ACLU is suing President Trump for illegally separating a child from her mother who entered the United States seeking asylum.
Trump lost one DACA battle today. Hopefully he loses this one too!

The ACLU believes this is yet another case in which Trump’s policies and actions focus on dismantling immigrant families, and an outright disregard for this country’s rule of law. The woman in question has already passed the initial screening in regards to fearing for her physical safety if extradited back to Congo, but has yet to be granted asylum by federal officials.
“unlawfully separating a Congolese woman and her 7-year-old daughter by holding them in different immigration facilities, two time zones apart, after they sought asylum four months ago.”

According to the ACLU, the Trump administration has been far stricter on immigrant families than administration’s in the past. In previous years, those illegally entering have been held in detention centers, and on certain occasions separated from their families. However, Trump has ramped up this sort of action, sending a clear sign to anybody entering that even their families are at risk if they attempt to come into the country illegally.
Currently, the ACLU is working on the woman’s case, as she is extremely worried about whether or not she will be able to see her daughter again. The pair have only spoke on the phone a handful of times since their separation last November. As the Trump administration shows a ruthless disregard for the relationships between families, especially during difficult times of seeking asylum and escaping their countries, it is apparent that their actions are having very real detrimental impacts on the specific individuals involved.
