The firing of former FBI Acting Director Andrew McCabe just 26 hours before his planned retirement has rocked the political news world and many within the intelligence community who have worked with McCabe.
In a stunning statement on Twitter, former CIA Director John Brennan made serious accusations against President Trump over that firing.
Brennan was involved in the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential elections and has insider knowledge of the evidence in that probe. Although the former director served in the intelligence community for more than 25 years, he was appointed as director of the CIA by President Obama, which Trump has used to malign him, saying that Brennan is an “Obama holdover.” Brennan resigned the day Trump was inaugurated.
While the former CIA director has criticized Trump for his vilification of intelligence community officials and his refusal to validate reports that Russia interfered in the elections, his tweet marks the first time anyone with insider information has said publicly that Trump not only committed a crime, but that he deserves to be impeached, and possibly held responsible for corruption.
Brennan has previously said publicly that he believes Trump and his campaign colluded with Russia to win the election. Under oath to the House Intelligence Committee, Brennan said:
‘I encountered and am aware of information and intelligence that revealed contacts and interactions between Russian officials and U.S. persons involved in the Trump campaign that I was concerned about because of known Russian efforts to suborn such individuals. And it raised questions in my mind again whether or not the Russians were able to gain the cooperation of those individuals.’
Twitter weighed in with their thoughts on the tweet Brennan posted.
