Late Friday, the saga of the Trump administration versus the institutions of law and order in the United States reached another flashpoint when Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe. McCabe had borne the brunt of significant criticism from the president himself for some time, who alleged that the one-time Acting FBI Director had infected the Clinton email investigation with corruption.

In light of his past criticism of McCabe, Trump took to Twitter Friday evening to praise his firing, writing that it represented a “great day for Democracy.”

That’s not where the issue ends, however. McCabe isn’t leaving the FBI with his head hanging and his dismissal wasn’t a clean-cut firing, either.

He was fired just before his 50th birthday, and if he made it to that milestone, he would have become eligible for early retirement benefits, as CNN explains.

Now, however, since he’s been dismissed early, he could miss out on retirement benefits until he’s 57, an estimated up to half a million dollars.

Reporter Andrea Mitchell posted a statement on Twitter with a perspective from an unidentified McCabe supporter on this issue. The supporter posited that if a member of Congress took on McCabe for a job lasting just a short period of time, his years of service could be extended long enough to make him eligible for early retirement benefits after all.

One Democratic Congressman replied to Mitchell with an apparent offer of a job for McCabe, although it’s unclear how formal the offer is and if McCabe would even be interested.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, who represents Wisconsin’s Second Congressional District, posted a statement to Twitter in response to Mitchell reading:

‘Andrew call me. I could use a good two-day report on the biggest crime families in Washington, D.C.’

As for what Pocan no doubt meant to imply here — that the Trumps should be counted among the “biggest crime families in Washington, D.C.” — McCabe’s dismissal comes in the midst of ongoing efforts from the Trump team to see an end to the Russia investigation. Trump and his associates are terrible at acting as innocent as they claim to be, and McCabe’s firing could be about “cleaning house” to avoid legal scrutiny.

Such wouldn’t be the first time a high ranking FBI official was fired with such an aim in mind. Last May, the president abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey, which he quickly let slip he did with the Russia investigation in mind.

This time around, the president’s personal lawyer John Dowd has used McCabe’s firing as an opportunity to call for the end of the Russia investigation, but he retracted his claim that he was speaking on behalf of the president in doing so.

As for McCabe, he faces accusations of having “misled investigators about his role in directing other officials at the FBI to speak to The Wall Street Journal about his involvement in a public corruption investigation into the Clinton Foundation.”

He insists that he’s done nothing wrong, commenting on his firing in part by saying:

‘This attack on my credibility is one part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally. It is part of this Administration’s ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation, which continue to this day. Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the Special Counsel’s work.’
