Recently, Vladimir Putin won another term in office. If he serves to the end, he will be the longest-running Russian leader since Stalin. Because the election was highly questionable, with Putin using criminal charges to undermine the opposition, as well as multiple reports of election fraud, virtually no world leaders congratulated Putin on his win. Chinese President Xi Jinping, who recently moved to become leader-for-life, was one of those who offered congratulations, as well as several other authoritarian nations.

In addition to the authoritarians who congratulated Putin, at least one wannabe authoritarian did—Donald Trump. Trump said that he called Putin and congratulated him on his win. That decision has faced broad criticism from many sides. Republican Senator John McCain, often a critic of Trump, (R-AZ) was especially strong in his criticism.

Via CNN:

‘Trump’s decision to congratulate Putin on his electoral win drew consternation from McCain who said that “an American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections.”

‘”And by doing so with Vladimir Putin, President Trump insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country’s future, including the countless Russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist Putin’s regime,” McCain added.

‘White House press secretary Sarah Sanders later said that two key issues — Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election and accusations that Russia used a nerve agent to poison a former Russian spy in the United Kingdom — likely did not come up during the call, but disagreed with McCain’s criticism.’

Congratulating a dictator on a sham election is an insult to both the Russian people and democracy itself. For someone that talks about “American values,” Trump sure seems to have no respect for core concepts of western democracy, like fair elections and free speech.

In fact, Trump’s worship of Vladimir Putin is a huge red flag when it comes to the question of whether or not he colluded during the campaign. Russia is not our friend. Russia annexed part of another country just a few years ago, and after that, invaded a military ally of the United States. Russia’s government and organized crime are one and the same. Thanks to Putin’s fantasies of restoring Russia’s power, Russia has become a great force for instability in the world, carrying out multiple assassinations on British soil. Russian mercenaries have come into combat with US forces in Syria. Russia kills and imprisons journalists, activists, and whistleblowers. Russia is using every tool at their disposal to destabilize powerful Western nations to make it easier to change the world order. Russia. Is. Not. Our. Friend.

So why does Trump want to be best friends with Putin so badly? Perhaps it’s simple—he looks up to the guy. He wishes he could treat the American people the same, and fantasizes about nearly unlimited power. Maybe he’s just desperate for public approval. Or maybe, just maybe, he’s dirty.
