Since the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, many allies have been showing their support for the students and those who have chosen to rally and protest to make their schools safer. Although Mr. Trump has done very little to show support for a school and students who have lost 17 lives due to senseless gun violence, former President Obama and first lady Michelle now seem to be doing the president’s job for him.

On Wednesday, Mic published that they obtained a handwritten letter to the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The later, which was dated March 10, was signed by Barack and Michelle who wrote about how inspired they were by the students speaking out.

The Obamas wrote:

‘We wanted to let you know how inspired we have been by the resilience, resolve and solidarity that you have all shown in the wake of unspeakable tragedy.

‘Not only have you supported and comforted each other, but you’ve helped awaken the conscience of the nation, and challenged decision-makers to make the safety of our children the country’s top priority.

‘Throughout our history, young people like you have led the way in making America better. There may be setbacks; you may sometimes feel like progress is too slow in coming. But we have no doubt you are going to make an enormous difference in the days and years to come, and we will be there for you.’

On Saturday, the Parkland students along with many others are set to march in Washington D.C. for March For Our Lives, trying to gain national attention around the issue of gun violence and put pressure on politicians to enact stronger gun laws.

In closing, they wrote:

‘Throughout our history, young people like you have led the way in making America better. There may be setbacks; you may sometimes feel like progress is too slow in coming. But we have no doubt you are going to make an enormous difference in the days  and years to come, and we will be there for you.’

A full transcription of the letter reads:

‘To the students of Parkland —

We wanted to let you know how inspired we have been by the resilience, resolve and solidarity that you have all shown in the wake of unspeakable tragedy.

Not only have you supported and comforted each other, but you’ve helped awaken the conscience of the nation, and challenged decision-makers to make the safety of our children the country’s top priority

Barack Obama Michelle Obama

What a wonderful letter of encouragement from two people who really made a difference in our country for eight years, and aren’t slowing down now.
