Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) seems to be a long-term fixture these days in Congress. McConnell, who has kept his Senate seat since 1985, should have had the best year yet thanks to Trump’s election. However, his year didn’t go as planned and he actually has few accomplishments to show for it.
During his 2014 reelection campaign, McConnell called into Jones’ show unannounced. Jones asked about his the senator’s basketball allegiances and then the two “shifted from basketball to the minimum wage, same-sex marriage and global warming—13 minutes of tense radio that might provide a preview of what the Senate majority leader is in for in his 2020 reelection race.”
‘What has Mitch McConnell done to help Kentucky? Mitch McConnell has been a master—a master at helping wealthy business interests get wealthier. If there is a rich guy Hall of Fame, he should be in it.’
Jones decided to forgo a law career to launch a sports blog in 2005, and then launched his radio show in 2011. Jones obtained degrees from Transylvania University and Duke University Law School where he graduated second in his class. Since then, his show has become popular in nearly every district of the state.
According to POLITICO:
‘The motivating force behind Jones’ political aspirations is an unflagging loyalty to his Eastern Kentucky home. He hails from Middlesboro, a mountain town in the heart of Appalachian coal country whose chief industry is manufacturing sewer covers. Jones grew up with his single mother, a Republican Commonwealth attorney for the surrounding county and one of the first women elected prosecutor in the state.’
Jones is confident that he is the only Democrat that could beat Senator McConnell, who has occupied his Kentucky seat for way too long. Jones said:
‘I’m not a politician. I’m an ideologue, and I think we’re in a time when ideologues win.’
