Former CIA Director John Brennan Mocks Trump’s ‘Self Adoration’ Like A Real Patriot

If there’s one thing that can be said about the president based off his initial time in office, it’s that he’s self-obsessed. He seems at times to meticulously follow the very news media that he so loves to hate, nitpicking their coverage of him and dismissing, at times, essentially every major news outlet in the United States besides Fox as illegitimate.

On Thursday, former CIA Director John Brennan tore into the president over this feature of his personality and administration via the president’s favorite medium, Twitter.

He was responding to yet another post from the president touting a polling firm that had found his approval rating to be rather high. Some of the latest numbers from Rasmussen Reports, which has long been documented to lean right, have his approval rating at 51 percent. (The polling and statistics experts at FiveThirtyEight give Rasmussen a C+, for the record.)

Commenting on the fact that trotting out these numbers is how the president continues to choose to occupy himself, Brennan wrote:

‘I served 6 Presidents, 3 Rs & 3Ds. I directly supported Clinton, Bush 43, and Obama. While I didn’t agree with all their policy choices, I admired and respected all of them, as they put country above their personal interests. Not so with you, as your self adoration is disgraceful.’

It’s worth noting as just one more indication of where the president’s head is that his original post about the approval rating found by Rasmussen contains a link to Breitbart, the far right website that his former strategist Steve Bannon helped steer for a time.

The post of his about the newly released Rasmussen numbers is hardly the only example that Brennan can draw from to conclude that the president is self-obsessed.

On a slightly more tangible level, for instance, the president has routinely disposed of the counsel of experienced voices in favor of relying on his own judgment and inclinations. He was recently reported to have been directed in all capital letters to not congratulate Vladimir Putin on his victory in Russia’s recent sham election only to do that very thing during a phone conversation with the Russian leader.

During the lead-up to the election, he commented at one point that he was his own chief adviser when it came to issues of foreign policy, and he has evidently not strayed significantly from that mindset.

As one example of this tendency that is perhaps more immediately relevant to Brennan, the president has continuously dismissed warnings from an array of officials about the severity of the Kremlin’s threat to the West. At one point, he went so far as to comment that he believed Vladimir Putin’s denials of having meddled in our election, commenting that former U.S. intel chiefs who were opposite his position — like Brennan — were just “political hacks.”

Trump eventually tried to walk back his initial remarks by saying that he believed that Putin believes his country not to have meddled in our recent elections but recognizes the evidence asserting that Russia did interfere.

Despite the president’s best efforts to make it be otherwise, threats like that of Russian interference in our elections remain pressing, but some of those attuned to the threats — like John Brennan — no longer have jobs in government.
