For a man who was very much against President Obama signing Executive Orders, Donald Trump sure seems to like signing them himself. He thought it was wrong to legislate through presidential action…but only when the last president did it. Trump must figure since Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell aren’t accomplishing enough of his agenda in Congress, he’ll have to implement his plan with a pen, and it doesn’t trouble him one bit.
This week, Trump quietly signed an E.O. that targets recipients of Medicaid, food stamps, and housing assistance. Apparently, he’s trying to save the government some much needed money considering his tax scam is draining our coffers. Of course, that has been the Republican’s plan since they took over the majority in Congress – give huge tax cuts, and then use our lack of money to go after “entitlement” programs. Paul Ryan has bragged that was what they were going to do, and now it looks like Trump is going to make his dream come true.
With so many bad things going on in the country right now, Trump’s new E.O. hasn’t gained much public attention…yet. People have been paying more attention to all of Trump’s legal problems, and what’s going on in Syria, and so many are unaware that Trump has started waging a war on the poorest members of our society. But this is big news, and people will start paying attention to it very quickly.
Trump’s newest order calls on the Departments of Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Agriculture and other agencies across the federal government to craft new rules requiring that beneficiaries of a host of programs work or lose their benefits. In a lot of conservative led states, a person might not be eligible for benefits even if they earn a very small amount of money. Depending on how much money a person starts earning through the new work requirements, even if it’s nowhere close to enough to feed themselves or their family, they may be completely cut off from receiving benefits.
No matter how heartless Trump’s new order is, he certainly doesn’t see it that way. He had this to say about the programs that have helped many millions of struggling people:
‘Since its inception, the welfare system has grown into a large bureaucracy that might be susceptible to measuring success by how many people are enrolled in a program rather than by how many have moved from poverty into financial independence.’
His new order will be targeted at “any program that provides means-tested assistance or other assistance that provides benefits to people, households or families that have low incomes.”
House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (Md.) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) had this to say about Trump’s new order:
‘This executive order perpetuates false and racist stereotypes about certain groups supposedly taking advantage of government assistance.’
Reagan used the fake welfare queen to turn regular people against anyone who needs public assistance, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone if Trump figures out his own scheme to do the same thing. The fact of the matter is Trump doesn’t like poor people, and his new order cruelly attacks the very people who need our help the most.
