On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron and wife Brigitte Macron landed in Washington for their first state visit since Trump took office last year. Macron, who has developed a seemingly unusual bond with Trump, is reportedly poised to make a case for the maintenance of the Iran nuclear agreement in the face of increasing criticism on behalf of the administration, as well as other foreign policy issues including keeping US troops in Syria for a longer period of time.
However, it seems as if the visit could not come at a more inopportune time for the Trump administration, as they continue to face an onslaught of controversy and challenges from all angles. From the falling through of Trump’s VA nominee Ronny Jackson, to ongoing tensions between the president and first lady, it is clear that Macron’s first visit was marked with awkwardness and embarrassment. Trump posted a tweet earlier Tuesday stating his honor to be hosting the French first couple at their upcoming State Dinner, tagging Melania in his post as well.
Today, @FLOTUS Melania and I were honored to welcome French President @EmmanuelMacron and Mrs. Brigitte Macron to the @WhiteHouse. We look forward to hosting them at tonight's State Dinner, in their honor. pic.twitter.com/wGJcWqSzyP

The Trumps have clearly had a rocky recent few weeks, as the Stormy Daniels case continues to expand and gather evidence, and another adult film actress alleging that the president indirectly offered her money for sexual intercourse. Melania, clearly fed up with the embarrassment that has come from these allegations, refused to hold her husband’s hand when the two couples were seen on the White House lawn earlier on Tuesday. In regards to Trump’s tweet about being honored to host the French president and his wife, it is clear that Twitter users had a field day in pointing out the awkward visit:

Macron hates you, and so does Melania

Why doesn't she want to hold your hand?

@FLOTUS looked very pleased to welcome them. Less so to be in your close proximity. SAD.

It is not a State Dinner when it excludes the representatives of over half the population. It is a #treasonweasel dinner.

Yeah she looks thrilled. Why won't she hold your hand? Is it because she has no idea where it's been, or should I say who it's been in? ?

You’re an embarrassment to the American people. Please accept our apologies in advance, President and Mrs. Macron.

Your presence will ruin this dinner. Good time for you to announce your resignation.
Macron and millions of others DO NOT LIKE YOU.
