Many people know that Donald Trump has been running scared in the face of the Russia investigation. His frequent outbursts while being interviewed and his Twitter tirades pretty much prove it. Heck, he often ends a lot of his rambling word salads by adding in “there was no collusion,” even when no one was talking about that subject in the first place. Trump is scared of Robert Mueller and what he’s going to discover about him.
The Washington Post reported today that in a tense meeting last month, Trump’s lawyers told Robert Mueller that Trump had no obligation to talk with federal investigators probing Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. But Mueller had an answer ready for that…he’d just subpoena Trump to appear before a grand jury, if his hand was forced, according to four people familiar with the encounter.
Mueller’s warning spurred a sharp retort from John Dowd, then the president’s lead lawyer. “This isn’t some game. You are screwing with the work of the president of the United States.”
The incident caused quite a stir among Trump’s legal team as they tried to figure out ways for Trump to weasel out of the interview. The turmoil even caused John Dowd to quit the team. His departure led to a huge public embarrassment for Trump considering he had a very difficult time finding any other attorneys who wanted to represent him.
The soap opera that is Donald Trump and all that surrounds him has become an international disgrace for the U.S. It will only get better if Robert Mueller has to subpoena the sitting president in order to make him talk. One thing is certain though, Mueller wants answers to his questions and it sounds as if he’ll do what he has to do to get them. We’re a country of laws and it’s time for Donald Trump to do what’s right by cooperating with this investigation.
