The president remains perpetually paranoid over the existence of the Russia investigation. Rather than letting it run its course, which is what you’d think he’d do if he was as innocent as he’s claimed to be, he’s freaked out and sought to undercut it time and time again.
In recent weeks and months, the president has again ramped up his attacks, this time prompted by the authorities raiding the home, office, and hotel room of his personal lawyer Michael Cohen in a matter that is, to be sure, distinct from the Russia investigation. Even still, the president is undeterred.
Monday morning, he took to Twitter with a new round of attacks, again subjecting the country he is supposed to be leading to his barely half-coherent social media ramblings.
He cast the continued employment at the FBI of Peter Strzok as a grave threat to the nation and pressed Republicans to join him to fight the supposedly vast conspiratorial “phony witch hunt” of the Russia investigation. He’s like a storyteller who’s supposed to be entertaining people around a campfire and is really, really bad at it. He’s peddling ridiculous fantasy.
He began by writing:
‘Lisa Page, who may hold the record for the most Emails in the shortest period of time (to her Lover, Peter S), and attorney Baker, are out at the FBI as part of the Probers getting caught? Why is Peter S still there? What a total mess. Our Country has to get back to Business!’
The president is accurately referencing the fact that Lisa Page, who is a former aide to former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, and James Baker, who is a former general counsel for the FBI, left the FBI recently. Page had an affair with fellow FBI official Peter Strzok, and the two of them were found recently to have exchanged text messages in which they expressed anti-Trump sentiment.
The existence of those text messages has been turned by the president and his allies into evidence of a vast conspiracy in the nation’s justice system against the president, but no matter their delusions, the fact that Peter Strzok still has a job is really not one of the chief national security concerns the president should be worrying about right now, to put it lightly.
The president wasn’t finished, going on Monday morning to let on that he’s feeling the heat of a rising “blue wave” ahead of the midterm elections later this year.
He wrote:
‘Is this Phony Witch Hunt going to go on even longer so it wrongfully impacts the Mid-Term Elections, which is what the Democrats always intended? Republicans better get tough and smart before it is too late!’
“Witch hunt” is one of the president’s favorite phrases to use when talking about the Russia investigation, but saying it three times — or thirty times — in front of a mirror is not going to make Richard Nixon appear, saving him from all his problems in the process. (Nixon was also fond of the phrase.)
Before the tweets posted above, the president posted a tweet congratulating the newly confirmed U.S. Ambassador to Germany and touted a book written by a couple of his supporters.
He also eventually criticized former Secretary of State John Kerry for behind the scenes efforts to save the Iran nuclear deal.
